| Halfway Foundation - How
it Began Winston Churchill In
the spring of 1993 two cars departed from the parking lot of One of the passengers was
deeply affected by the conditions in the hospital, because these did not even come close
to the quality and to the level of treatment that such an affliction requires. He
suggested to his sponsor that something be done in order to provide more humane and
effective support to those who require short term or long term care because of this
illness. He did not want this to be in a hospital, but within the framework of a programme
that can effectively support alcoholics who are undergoing treatment. His sponsor, who at
that time had already been working as a social worker and had supported society's most
vulnerable citizens, suggested that he write down the plan and sleep over it. His desire to act has not
faltered during the following weeks, and he began to set up the foundation, turning to his
sober fellows and their friends, asking for support to establish and to formally register
the foundation. Some of them supported the foundation with specific ideas or financial
support, while some provided only their names, indicating that they did not wish to take
part in the foundation's activities. The actual establishment of
the foundation began in August 2009. The registration request was granted by the The Foundation's Goals .
Provide inpatient and
outpatient psychological support for people with alcohol dependency problems and
alcoholism; .
Offer tools to understand
the illness; .
Decrease feelings of anxiety
and fear; .
Inspire hope; .
Develop a manageable vision
of the future; .
Formulate a realistic life
strategy. The aim of our organization is
to forge a stronger bond between patients and their families by facilitating a deeper
level of understanding and acceptance of this illness. We provide information to young
people about the complex illness of alcoholism, provide them with education and
support, and help them to recognise early symptoms, thus avoiding possible disasters. We fight to
eradicate
prejudices and contribute to a shift in attitudes towards alcoholism and the societal
tensions it creates. The
Foundation is managed by a four-member Board of Trustees, and its activities are
supervised by a three-member Supervisory Committee. The

Foundation's Activities Education
Our
leadership believes that in addition to providing support to those who are affected by
alcoholism, it is vital that young people learn more about how this illness progresses. To
facilitate this process, we place heavy emphasis on educational activities. We participate
in various cultural events, such as the annual Sziget Festival (www.sziget.hu) and Addiction Day (www.sziget.hu/szenvedelyeknapja),
a programme launched by our foundation and organised by Sziget Rendezvényszervező Kft. Furthermore, we
publish educational brochures, pamphlets and books related to alcoholism. Education
in Schools Based
on invitations we receive, we visit secondary schools so that we can contribute to the
prevention of this illness by providing reliable information to students. In
the course of our educational activities over the past eight years we have observed that
the age of young people who have tried alcohol decreased from between 14 and 16 to between
12 and 14 years. The number of secondary school students who consume alcohol is on a
steady rise. Sziget
Festival We
have been regular participants at the Sziget Cultural Festival since 1996. Young
people fill out a questionnaire that contains 20 questions, allowing us to discuss
problems related to drinking. Based on approximately 1,000 questionnaires completed so
far, we have concluded that nearly 75% of young people may experience significant mental
problems as a direct result of alcohol consumption. Addiction
Day
Based
on an initiative by our Foundation, professionals and interested individuals alike have
been given the opportunity to engage in dialogue regarding the world of addiction.
Institutions and organisations-whose primary activities involve dealing with
addictions-participate and present their work at the Corvin Filmpalota; they
can attend presentations and listen to speeches by professionals in the field, and also
watch educational films that promote the prevention of this illness. Self-help
groups such as AA and GA spread the news that recovery is possible. Publications We
wish to encourage the prevention of addictions and to find ways to recovery by circulating
and disseminating publications. Organisational

About Us Félút Centrum
(Halfway Centre - HC) is Halfway Foundation's centre for
the treatment of alcoholics and gamblers. It provides a broad range of professional
support services to adults and their families who struggle with addiction to alcohol or
gambling, and who are ready to take the next step towards changing their lives. Alcohol
dependency is a complex mental, spiritual and physical disorder that affects the entire
family. HC provides organized and ongoing clinical services that are tailored to the
medical and social needs of the alcoholic, thus increasing the potential for a successful
recovery. Based on
individual needs, applicants may choose between outpatient (ambulatory) and inpatient
(residential) care. Services in the institute are provided for a fee, which is determined
on the basis of each individual client's social circumstances and living conditions. The
programme lasts 28 working days, and including the weekends takes 6 weeks to complete.
Participation in the treatment programme is preceded by a comprehensive health assessment
(including medical and psychological evaluation) that determines whether the applicant is
suitable to participate in the treatment programme; it is a stand-alone diagnostic
procedure that enables the centre to provide a highly accurate insight into the
patient's level of alcohol dependency. Within the scope of this service, our outpatient
clinic provides companies the option to have their employees assessed. If required, we
provide early treatment to prevent more damage.
The high
quality work of our institute is made possible by a staff of committed professionals,
including doctors, psychologists, substance abuse specialists, social workers and nurses. The
institute provides these services only if an appointment has been scheduled in advance
over the phone. Please call (+36) 1 258 6878 to make an appointment. If you
know an affected person or family that requires help, please tell them about this web

treats alcoholism as a distinct illness that has physiological, psychological, social and
spiritual elements. It is an illness just like pneumonia - the same way we can not tell a
person who has fever to stop having fever, we can not ask an alcoholic to develop the
necessary willpower to stop tumbling into more advanced stages of alcoholism. If
alcoholism is defined as the illness that it actually is, alcoholics and their environment
will be able to develop the necessary relief from judgments by their surroundings and
themselves, allowing the institute to approach the family and provide the necessary
support and care. The more we treat alcoholism as an illness and stop approaching it from
a moral high ground, the more successful we will become in letting the patients and their
environments know how important it is to involve professional outside help. Alcoholism
is a family illness: it causes suffering that affects the entire family, and everybody
must play a part to make a change. Neglecting the illness may lead, among others, to the
physical and moral degradation of the alcoholic, loss of employment, poverty, breakup of
the family, and problematic upbringing of children. We are
convinced that in order to help families who are affected by alcoholism, we need to
provide them with medical, psychological and other kinds of professional support. 28-Day Treatment Programme Halfway
Centre's treatment programme follows the American Minnesota Model, based on the premise
that the effectiveness of clinical treatment increases significantly if the institution
that treats alcohol dependency builds on the spiritual 12-step programmes that support
recovery.
Abstinence is a
physical condition that is characterized by the lack of alcohol in the individual's
system. Withdrawal symptoms (perspiration, shakes, pressure around the area of the heart,
increased heart rate, fear of death, etc.) are longer likely. In the
process of recovery and achieving sobriety, the
method of dealing with experiences changes, new feelings come to surface, a new way of
thinking emerges, and new relationships form - all of which result in the formation of a
new way of life. All these can be achieved in an environment that is supported by
self-help programmes and that applies methods which have been proven to be successful over
the past several decades. HC's
treatment programme helps the individual to achieve and to maintain abstinence, to work on
achieving sobriety, and within the scope of a professional programme, begins the road to
permanent recovery that helps the alcoholic begin a new life. The Application Process

28-day Treatment Programme .
The treatment
programme is tailored to the patients' and their relatives' personal medical and
personal circumstances. .
In order to ensure
maximum effectiveness, the institute guarantees a comprehensive, professional, intensive
and structured treatment programme. .
Every treatment day
is uniquely planned and professionally supervised - individual elements with respect to
treatment and education are complemented by the methods of self-help groups. .
Our patients will
learn about the methods used by 12-step programmes. .
The family programme
forms a fundamental element of the treatment programme. On certain days family members
participate in organized group activities. Based on
individual requirements, patients may choose from inpatient or outpatient treatment
programmes. All the services used in the institutions are provided for a fee, which is
determined based on the patients' social and financial circumstances. Following
completion of the 28-day treatment programme, patients have the opportunity to participate
in our outpatient afternoon group therapy sessions. We
attribute great significance to keeping an eye on patients even after they have left the
programme, and so we organise quarterly "return
groups", where we welcome previous patients and their families. Outpatient Care Alcoholics
and their families may visit our afternoon groups within the framework of our outpatient
care programme. We provide the following services: .
Group therapy
sessions for alcoholics on Mondays; .
Therapy sessions for
alcoholics' relatives on Thursdays; .
Free sessions for
gambling addicts on Fridays; .
.
Individual
counselling sessions. Based on
individual demand we also provide support with solving legal, medical, and social issues. Inpatient Care Halfway
Centre provides accommodation for patients from across the country. The centre has four
rooms with three beds each, for those addicts (gamblers or alcoholics) who have been
deemed suitable for the programme. Our

Support for the
families of patients during family days. Inpatient
care is provided primarily to patients whose families can actively participate in
programmes that are scheduled in advance. Support for Relatives We believe that alcoholism is a
family illness, i.e., that the family members of the alcoholic also suffer from their own
form of addiction. They repress their own emotions and focus on the emotional, mental and
physical state of the alcoholic; their lifestyle (in line with their co-dependency) is
superseded by that of the alcoholic. Children of alcoholics have an
increased risk of developing their own addictive patterns of behaviour. This can be
prevented if they are aware of the warning signals, and take advantage of the support that
is provided by these self-help groups and the professional medical advice given in the
institution. Having experience with self-help
groups, we know that relatives (although they may not think so) experience it as a
stressful experience when the alcoholic or the gambler stops his or her addictive
behaviour. The initial stages may be frightening because they are periods of insecurity
and anxiety during which the family learns to trust the addict again. Naturally they
believe that it is the addict's job to quit, and once the addict has stopped, all the
problems cease to exist. Yet the opposite is true: decades of co-dependence prove to be a
new source of problems. Our co-dependency programme does
the following: .
Provides
help with recognising the signs of co-dependency and with alleviating the suffering that
it causes. .
Helps
relieve tensions caused by living with the addict. .
By
applying various methods, it supports the acquisition of self-knowledge, and thereby helps
addicts with solving their problems and with better asserting themselves. .
Provides
help with developing new value systems and a new lifestyle, which are all necessary for
sobriety and recovery. The programme consists of: The co-dependency programme may
be started when we perform the alcoholic's status assessment. We perform an interview
with the relatives and get them to fill out a questionnaire. During the course of the
28-day treatment programme we have family days every Friday, when the alcoholics and their
family members participate in a group therapy session. We have regular visitors from
Al-Anon groups who introduce self-help groups to family members by sharing their own
experiences. Family members take part in
individual counselling sessions regarding co-dependency. We support the efforts of Al-Anon
and ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) groups. Our goal is to support the
efforts of the entire family in establishing a new, sober way of life, by introducing them
to the world of self-help groups. Treating Gambling
Addiction - The Illness Gambling - Fun It can
be a pastime. It lets you unwind. It's an experience. It can bring people together, it
can keep friends together, and it can balance work. You can win money, but that's not
important, because it doesn't change the purpose of the game. Gambling can alleviate
boredom; it can be light entertainment together with family and with friends or
acquaintances. Gambling is fun. It's reality. For you, for us, for everybody. Gambling - Addiction It can
be a pastime that is no longer relaxing. The positive experience only lasts for a few
moments, until the experience of losses starts to haunt you. It divides people, makes them
lonely and abandon friendships. Its original purpose is to make money, then
"survival". Its consequence is often debt. You can win money, but, most importantly,
you can lose money. This changes the purpose of the game. It is no longer there to
alleviate boredom or to entertain. It is a compulsion. A lonely compulsion. It is no
longer fun. It is suffering and an addiction. It's all an illusion. It's your
illusion. Gambling of Different
Kinds There
are different kinds of games. There are sports and there are games that inspire creativity
or a sense of competition, and those that ignite the imagination. We consider the lottery,
the horse races, poker, the one-armed-bandit and other socially acceptable gambling
activities all games. But more than just a simple game, there is an important aspect of
the illusion of "easy money". The emphasis is on "illusion", the illusion of the
"sure bet", the "foolproof system", something that the gambler believes to be
true. The gambler is unable to judge the risk. Gamblers believe that once they've won,
they will always win. They believe that if they've lost, they will never lose again.
Believing this, they cannot stop playing. If they win, they want to play more; if they
lose, they want to win back what they've lost. This is a vicious circle, surrounded by
another illusion in which they all think that they can "stop at any time". And this
remains the illusion, because they can never stop. The Warning Signs -
From a Social to a Compulsive Player .
Complete immersion
in, and intensive focus on gambling (e.g., thinks about previous events related to
gambling, or plans the next event). .
Frequent gambling,
often for longer periods or for higher amounts than originally planned. .
Increasing the stakes
or play more often to reach the desired level of excitement. .
Anxiety or
irritability if the gambler cannot play. .
Losing money,
returning to the game to win back lost money. .
Recurring
(unsuccessful) attempts to stop. .
Frequency of gambling
increases when societal pressures increase. .
An increase in
gambling to escape from problems or to recover from depression. .
Sacrificing work,
social or pastime activities to play. .
Lying to family
members or medical professionals. .
Borrowing money to
continue the habit or to offset damage caused by gambling. .
Illegal activities,
forgery, theft (even from home), embezzlement, to continue gambling. .
Debt and financial
losses. If you
believe that you are affected by gambling addiction, it is important to know that there is
a solution. There is way out. Our
28-day treatment programme is there to help. Treating Gambling
Addiction - The Programme Halfway
Centre's programme provides
support services to adults and their families who struggle with addiction to gambling, and
who are ready to take the next step towards changing their lives. The
treatment programme of Halfway Centre follows the American Minnesota Model, a programme
based on the premise that the effectiveness of clinical treatment increases significantly
if the institution treating the dependency builds on the spiritual 12-step self-help
programmes that support recovery. We
believe that self-help groups such as Gamblers Anonymous help achieve a new way of
thinking and a change in lifestyle that allows the patient to live a life that is free of
the compulsion to gamble. The
programme consists of 28 working days, and including the weekends takes 6 weeks to
complete. Participation requires attendance at GA meetings, individual and group therapy
sessions and film screenings. Treatment
is tailored to the individual patient and encompasses therapeutic, educational and
advisory services; however, if needed, it could include providing medication and
psychotherapy. Based on individual needs
applicants may choose between outpatient (ambulatory) and inpatient (residential) care. Services
in the institute are provided in exchange for a fee, which is established in each case on
the basis of each individual client's social and financial circumstances. Treating Gambling
Addiction - Our Goals Our goal
is to support the patient in achieving complete abstinence from gambling, which is the
basic requirement for participation in the programme and a fundamental element of the
recovery process. We can show patients how to find the path to a new way of life that is
no longer affected by addictions and compulsions. Our patients should learn about the
necessary tools that support their recovery and allow them to develop a new way of
thinking that promotes the establishment of a positive change in their lives. We want to
promote our patients' recovery, improve the quality of their relationships, and to move
on to an independent way of life. Our goal

everyday life and their families. It supports its participants with modern and humane
programmes that focus on the individual, manifesting their non-discriminatory nature
through the presence of those who work here. The
treatment programme is tailored to the individual and is aligned with the means of the
patients. It targets the illness and not the moral or ethical condition of the patient.
The aim of the programme is to show patients how they can recover by using their own inner
resources, and how they can learn to appreciate significant milestones in their recovery. In order
to achieve these goals we provide individual advice and therapy groups, within the scope
of five modules: .
Know yourself groups .
Communication groups .
Lifestyle advice .
Creative groups .
